Act One: Where Reading Begins is a program series designed to encourage early childhood literacy skills, and also introduce children to the world of theatrical arts, through the fun and excitement of storytelling theater. This collection contains interactive video productions of children’s storybooks acted out by CCPL staff members.

This collection contains images and information from the African-American Schools in Chesterfield County During the Segregated Era Exhibit presented by the African-American History Committee of the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia.
The schools represented in the Exhibit operated in an era when the official doctrine of “Separate, But Equal” education was implemented as “Separate, and Unequal.”
In presenting this Exhibit, the African-American History Committee acknowledges and honors the parents, teachers, administrators and staff who supported these schools for 100 years.
The Exhibit was presented in the Chesterfield County Museum, and was originally planned to run from February 2014 through July 2014. However, the exhibit was extended into 2016 because of its popularity, and because of the very positive public response.
Founded in 1981, the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia serves as the center for county history. Its mission is to collect, preserve, interpret and promote the county’s past for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations. This collection includes images of houses and other structures in Chesterfield County built between the late eighteenth- and early twentieth-century. Several different architectural styles are represented in the various buildings, which include farmhouses, cottages, plantation houses, churches, and government buildings. Some structures are part of historic sites, and some, such as Magnolia Grange, are on the National Register of Historic Places.

This collection includes postcards from across the United States and around the world. Images portray a variety of natural scenery and parks, buildings and structures, as well as works of art and museums, and provide a glimpse of unique places, cultural artifacts, and historical time periods.
The postcards in this collection were provided by employees of Chesterfield County Public Libraries (CCPL).

This collection contains a selection of images from Chester Garden Club Flower Show Books dating back to 1938. These Standard Home Flower Shows are held annually in Chester area homes in Chesterfield County, Virginia.
The Chester Garden Club was organized April 28th, 1931, and is a member of The Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. and National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc.

The Learning & Performance Center (LPC) promotes individual and organizational success within the county. LPC provides online and classroom instruction and resources. The staff at LPC is also available to conduct surveys and analyze results with departments, facilitate department retreats, assist with strategic planning efforts, coach individuals, provide departmental consultations related to organizational development needs and more.

Under the auspices of Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation in partnership with the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, the Historic Courthouse Complex includes the Chesterfield County Museum, 1892 Jail, 1917 Courthouse, Magnolia Grange, Historic Trinity Church, and Castlewood.
This collection includes images of the Courthouse Complex, commonly known as Courthouse Green, as well as maps and other informational resources. -

Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, in partnership with Chesterfield County Fire Department, presented a year-long exhibit, “Firefighting in Chesterfield County: The Original Thirteen Departments,” which opened in October 2013. Located in the county’s 1892 Old Jail, the exhibit depicted the history of Chesterfield’s original thirteen volunteer fire departments through photographs, memorabilia, fire-fighting equipment, communication devices, and oral histories.
The museum exhibit was inspired by the book “Chesterfield Fire Department: The Original Thirteen Departments” by retired Chesterfield Senior Battalion Chief David C. Creasy Sr., who played a central role in creating the exhibit. CCPL has copies of Creasy’s book at some library branches.
This collection includes images and videos of exhibit materials, as well as photographs that were provided by David Creasy. -

This collection includes scanned images of various materials that Jeffrey M. O’Dell gathered in the course of writing his book, Chesterfield County: Early Architecture and Historic Sites, which was published in 1983. Images consist of research notes, photographs, and other documents associated with the locations and sites discussed in the book.
CCPL has copies of O’Dell’s book at various library branches. Of other possible interest, CCPL has a copy of another of O’Dell’s books, Inventory of Early Architecture and Historic Sites, County of Henrico, Virginia. -
This collection includes scanned images of outtake materials related to buildings and sites that were not included in Jeffrey O’Dell's book, Chesterfield County: Early Architecture and Historic Sites, which was published in 1983. CCPL has copies of O’Dell’s book at various library branches.

The John Rolfe Players (later renamed the Chesterfield Theatre Company), was a community theatre group based in Chester, Virginia. Formed in 1955 by Dorothy and Larry Armstrong, the group was the oldest community theatre company in Central Virginia. The company had a production history that spanned four decades, during which time it produced over 100 plays, both classic and modern. The John Rolfe Players disbanded in 1995, after its 36th season.
The collection includes 25 scrapbooks which cover the John Rolfe Players seasons from 1955 to 1994. They contain clippings from Richmond, Va. area newspapers and journals. Included are: theatre reviews, articles about the company and its members, short biographies, tours, programs, cast lists, advertisements, photographs of actors, and pictures from shows. Volume 25 is a summary volume. -
This collection includes correspondence between Union Army Private Lee Halbert and his wife, Savalla Jane Smith Halbert (see “Savalla Jane Smith Halbert Collection”), during the American Civil War. The letters describe the daily routines of Lee’s regiment as it moved south from New York toward Washington and Virginia, and his reflections on the War. They also detail his ever-present concerns about his family and the domestic affairs of his household.
Lee Halbert was born on June 22, 1822, in Otsego County, New York. He was raised in Taylor, a town in nearby Cortland County, and became a farmer by trade. In September 1861, he enlisted in Company A of the 76th Infantry Regiment, New York State Volunteers. Lee had served in what was nicknamed “The Cortland Regiment” for just under a year when he was killed in the Second Battle of Bull Run near Gainesville, Virginia, on August 28, 1862. -
Loud & Clear is Chesterfield County Public Library’s bimonthly magazine, which began publication in Summer 2012. The magazine presents information about library events and programming, articles and feature stories. Columns highlight programs and activities for individual age groups.
Loud & Clear is available in all Chesterfield County Public Library branches, as well as online at the library’s website, library.chesterfield.gov. It is also available through an email subscription. The community of Bon Air began as a summer resort for Richmond businessmen in the late 1800's. Over the years, the close-knit residents celebrated their unique heritage by sharing memories of these halcyon days. This collection consists of photographs, train schedules, clippings and other mementos that commemorate this unhurried time.

This collection includes contents from the keepsake memory box of Savalla Jane Smith Halbert, who was born on June 26, 1827 in Cortland, New York. Savalla (known to her friends and family as Jane), was married to Lee Halbert, from Taylor, New York, who died in the American Civil War (see “Lee Halbert Civil War Letters”), leaving her a widow at age 35. The contents of the box include letters, poetry, personal notes and correspondence, and her penmanship and calligraphy exercises. The collection also contains religious pamphlets and various other ephemera from her life. Jane Halbert died on July 31, 1905 in Cincinnatus, New York.
